Hartford students, along with students from Countryside, Hillside, and Parkway elementary schools, were honored with Recognition Awards by the Board of Education on March 28 for their winning entries representing Mount Laurel Fire Department in the statewide annual Fire Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Fire Prevention & Protection Association. The students were surprised when it was announced each would be taking home an iPad, thanks to community partner Farmers Insurance Lloyd Agency. If selected, the five local winners could advance through county and state level judging.
Members of Hartford School's National Elementary Honor Society recently held a drive at school for the Ronald McDonald House. After collecting items, they visited the Ronald McDonald House of Southern New Jersey in Camden to stock their pantry with the donated goods and they also cleaned and organized the toy room.
Through the efforts of the Hartford/Harrington PTO and Staff, a special section of the Hartford School Library was dedicated to Tracy Newhart on February 28, 2017. Ms. Newhart was a former Hillside School Teacher and Hartford Assistant Principal. She lost a valiant battle with cancer in February of 2016, and has been remembered lovingly at both schools through lasting tributes funded in part by an endowment from her family. Tracy's Corner features a reading area for students and a collection of books donated by families through the annual book fair.
Hartford fifth-grade students welcomed Cindy Callaghan, author of the "tweens" book "Just Add Magic" on March 1. Her book has been made into a popular television series on Amazon. She spoke about the writing process, character development and her inspiration during a morning assembly.
